Decorative wall – painting, wrapping and personalization step by step
We know perfectly well that a well-designed and personalized decorative wall can completely transform the atmosphere of an event. It's not just a backdrop—it's also the focal point of any arrangement. That's why we've prepared a step-by-step guide on how to personalize a wall yourself, to delight your guests and create a decoration you can reuse over and over again.
What you will need:
- medium grit sandpaper,
- wood primer (optional, but recommended),
- acrylic or latex paints in selected colors,
- rollers and brushes of various sizes,
- masking tape,
- protective films to protect the substrate.
1. Preparing the wall for painting or wrapping (sanding)
Before you begin, check what material your wall is made of— MDF or plywood? Both materials require slightly different approaches.
Lightly sand the surface with medium-grit sandpaper to remove any irregularities and matt the surface (in the case of plywood, pay attention to smoothing out any splinters and irregularities).
Thoroughly remove sanding dust with a damp cloth or vacuum cleaner.
Why is this important? Without sanding, the paint won't adhere perfectly—it's the first step to a lasting effect.
2. Priming (base for paint)
Apply wood primer or a special primer for MDF (e.g., acrylic primer). The primer is especially important because it seals the porous MDF surface, reduces paint absorption, and improves adhesion. For plywood, it's recommended to use a wood primer to protect the surface and reduce paint absorption. Primed plywood is less susceptible to uneven paint absorption.
3. Painting - smooth, even finish
Painting is the easiest way to change the look of a wall. You can choose a solid color or create interesting effects, such as ombre or geometric patterns.
Steps:
- Apply the first coat of paint with a thin roller to avoid streaks.
- Once dry, apply a second coat for full coverage.
- If you want, use painter's tape to mark patterns or color zones.
- Allow the paint to dry thoroughly (usually 2-4 hours).
We recommend using acrylic or latex paints, which are easy to apply, moisture-resistant, and easy to clean. For more information on choosing paint for walls, see: How to Paint Decorative Walls? A Guide for Decorators
4. Wall wrapping – creative personalization
Wall wrapping is a great way to add text, graphics, or patterns, especially if you want to quickly change the arrangement.
Materials you can use:
- matte or glossy self-adhesive foils
- fashionable this season - wallpapers!
- stickers with ready-made inscriptions
How to do it:
- Make sure the surface is clean and dry.
- Apply the sticker or foil slowly, using a squeegee to remove any air bubbles.
- If you are using stencils, secure their edges with painter's tape and gently paint your chosen pattern.
5. Additional elements – balloons, flowers and lights
After painting and wrapping the wall, you can add three-dimensional decorations to enhance its character. Balloons, flower garlands, or neon signs are just some of the possibilities.
Pro tip: To attach lightweight decorations, use double-sided tape or special adhesive hooks that won't damage the wall surface. LED lights are also a great option, as they can be just as easy to install. Check it out: How to install LED signs on wooden walls?
How to care for a wall so that it lasts for years?
- After each use, gently clean the surface with a damp cloth.
- Store the wall flat/or vertically in a dry place.
- Avoid sharp impacts and excessive loads to avoid damaging the structure.
